Ax Wound #3 Review by Manda Brezicky
Jun 19th
From the blog The Dancing ManDuh Bonanza:
So I just finished Ax Wound #3 (I managed to pace myself reading it, an amazing feat for me!) edited by Hannah Neurotica. In my collection of zines, this is a pretty massive tome at 102 pages; but it’s not a page too long. The subtitle of AW is Gender and the Horror Genre. This zine is pretty much a must-have for feminists and horror fans alike. Interviews, art, poetry, fiction…this zine has it all, as long as it’s horror related.
I think what I loved most was the awesome horror movies this introduced me too. May is one of my favorite movies now; I couldn’t NOT go watch it after reading Lindsey Campbell’s article “Queer Horror and Unusual Desire in MAY.”
My favorite article though, was a tie between Michael Forman’s (Hannah’s late father) “Twilight Drives a Stake Through the Heart of the Undead” and Clementine Cannibal’s “Chucky, Chainsaws, and Girl Survival.” Mr. Forman’s list perfectly embodies why I refuse to touch anything having to do with Twilight or Stephanie Myers. Also, his writing style in the article is hilarious. Clementine Cannibal’s article is both terrifying and empowering (yes, that’s all I’m saying about that, and if you have read “Chucky,” you understand why not much more can be said about it).
The layout is pleasing and simple, if a little empty in places (I’m more of a black negative-space gal myself, but that’s just my personal taste). Rachel Deacon’s superb art work is peppered throughout it in all the right places.
Over all, Ax Wound #3 has a cohesive layout, easy to read, and well worth taking the time to read. Ax Wound #3 as well as #1 and #2 can be found at www.axwoundzine.com
